Description
The GHL ProfiLux 4e Starter Set 6E is where serious aquarium control begins for reefers who want the accuracy, build quality and longevity that GHL has delivered to public aquariums and research institutions worldwide — at a price calibrated for the dedicated home hobbyist.
The “e” in ProfiLux 4e stands for essential. This is not a stripped-down entry-level unit — it is the same ProfiLux hardware and ProfiLuxOS platform as the flagship ProfiLux 4, with a focused feature set that covers everything the vast majority of reef keepers actually need, without charging for capabilities that most will never use. Every sensor input and expansion slot that GHL offers can be added to the 4e over time, making it a long-term investment rather than a stepping stone to replace.
ProfiLuxOS — a dedicated aquarium operating system
Most aquarium controllers run on general-purpose operating systems adapted for aquarium use. The ProfiLux runs ProfiLuxOS — an operating system built from the ground up by GHL, optimised specifically for aquarium control. It prioritises real-time response, operational safety and long-term stability in a way that general-purpose platforms cannot match. ProfiLuxOS has been continuously developed and refined since 1998, and every ProfiLux controller receives lifetime free firmware updates and direct GHL technical support.
Lab-grade parameter monitoring built in
The ProfiLux 4e ships with integrated modules for measuring temperature and pH/ORP — no additional modules required for these critical parameters. The included lab-grade digital temperature sensor and pH electrode deliver accuracy that conventional aquarium controllers can’t match. Unlike manual test kits, the ProfiLux continuously monitors these values in real time, logs data over time, and triggers alarms the moment a reading drifts outside the safe zone.
Connections for level sensors, leakage sensors and 1-10V interfaces are included on the base unit. Three on-board expansion slots accept GHL Expansion Cards that add conductivity/salinity monitoring, additional probe inputs, digital inputs, extra 1-10V outputs or PC communication interfaces — without the need for an external expansion box.
Powerbar 6E — six controllable outlets with PAB communication
The Starter Set includes the Powerbar 6E, which provides six individually controllable AC outlets connected to the ProfiLux via the ProfiLux Aquatic Bus (PAB). The PAB uses the automotive-grade CAN bus communication standard — the same system trusted in safety-critical vehicle applications — ensuring interference-free, reliable communication between the controller and the powerbar across cable runs of up to 100 meters. Each outlet can be programmed independently with schedules, parameter-based conditions and safety failsafes.
1-10V control — direct variable speed pump integration
The built-in 1-10V output ports allow direct control of variable speed pumps and other 1-10V compatible equipment without additional modules. This means GHL Stream pumps, Vortech pumps with Apex-compatible adapters and other 1-10V devices can be speed-controlled directly from the ProfiLux interface — wave programs, feed pauses, storm simulations and more.
32-channel lighting control
The ProfiLux 4e supports up to 32 channels of lighting control with GHL-compatible dimmable lights, enabling realistic simulations of sunrise, sunset, cloud cover, thunderstorms, moon phases and seasonal light cycles. The random cloud generator creates genuinely natural-looking variation throughout the day rather than simple on/off switching.
On-board display and touch keys
A built-in display and touch keys allow direct access to current probe values, basic settings, feed pause activation and other key functions without opening an app or connecting a device. The illuminated GHL logo acts as a colour-coded status indicator — green for normal operation, other colours for alerts or conditions requiring attention.
Four ways to connect — including cloud-free local access
The ProfiLux 4e connects via built-in WiFi, USB and the built-in webserver. The free GHL Connect app provides smartphone and tablet access from anywhere, and the myGHL cloud service enables remote monitoring and control. Crucially, the GHL Control Center PC software and built-in webserver both operate fully locally — without any internet connection. This is a meaningful distinction for reefers who value security and reliability over convenience, or who want a system that functions independently of external cloud services.
Expandable to the full GHL ecosystem
The ProfiLux 4e integrates natively with every GHL accessory: the KH Director for automated alkalinity monitoring, the Doser 2.1 for precision dosing, GHL Stream pumps, Expansion Cards, the Expansion Box 2, automatic fish feeders and more. The ProfiLux Aquatic Bus supports up to 100 meters of cable, making the system practical for large installations with equipment spread across different locations.
